There are different types of questions in the IELTS writing task 2 tests. It is important to learn the different types of questions in order to structure the essay correctly.

Broadly speaking, there are three different categories, as follows:

  • Opinion / Argumentative Essay
  • Discussion/ Both sides Essay
  • Two Questions Essay

Opinion / Argumentative Essay: In this type of essay, it is required to give your own opinion on a provided topic.

Sample question format:

The best way to reduce the traffic congestion on roads is to build more roads.
Do you agree or disagree?

Discussion/ Both sides Essay: In this type of essay, it is required to discuss both the sides of the argument and if asked in a question, you need to provide your own opinion too.

Sample question format:

Some people think that children suffer when they move along with their working parents to different country. Others, however, believe they are benefited.
Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.

Two Questions Essay: In this type of essay, you need to provide answers to two given questions in the task.

Sample question format:

The way people interact with each other has change due to advances in technology these days.
In what ways has technology affected personal relationship? Do you think this is positive or negative?
